The hats of the elite were crafted from felted beaver hair and adorned with decorations such as lace. Less expensive tricorns were constructed from wool felt or leather. The tricorn was made for the fashions of its time: it fitted exactly under the arm when entering a building, and had the perfect form to exhibit the fashionable wig of a wealthy gentleman.
